Insurance: Why I do not accept Managed Care Plans (MCP) reimbursement for mental health services.
1. Often they require a serious mental health diagnosis in order to pay for the treatment, which leads to a label that can affect job opportunities or other restrictions down the road.
No one should be given a mental health diagnosis that is not correct. Most MCP's will not cover marriage counseling, family counseling or adjustment disorders.
Often they will refuse, if client is not on any psychotropic medication.
2. Lack of confidentiality
All MCP's involve direct clinical management by the plan's case manager.
It makes it necessary for the therapist to disclose anything and
everything related to your case to MCP. The more severe one can make the
client looks the better the chances of reimbursement.
3. Difficulty getting treatment
It can be time consuming and cumbersome having to wait for
pressurization, then waiting to find a therapist, that they will ok. You will then have to wait to get in to the therapist.
